Toughness and grit are important qualities in the Melton family, and I think these traits are best exemplified by my grandmother. I’ll never forget one Christmas when she was at our house – she was helping some less spry members of the family get up from their seats to and from the dining room. We later learned that she had recently broken her foot, but it didn’t slow her down and she never complained. She certainly didn’t want anyone helping her up. There was also the time Aunt Betty came over to her house and found that she had passed out on the floor. Grandmother told my aunt that she was just fine and only taking a rest and was going to get up when she was ready. She didn’t want anyone to make a fuss over her. She was fiercely independent. She was tough enough to live on her own and even take care of a horse well into her 90s. Her strength was measured by restraint and kindness, which I think makes it the most powerful kind.
My brother and I will miss being able to call my grandmother and how her voice changed when she realized it was us. She knew TJ would try his best to call anytime he was stuck in a car, and oftentimes when he called the first thing she would ask is where he was headed. She was quick witted until the end and nothing got past her. It was a blessing that, while she did slow down physically, she never seemed to lose any of her spark. She also always knew as much about college football as anybody else in our household, which is truly an accomplishment.
My family has always supported my brother and me no matter what, and we have been blessed with the unconditional love of several people during our lives. However, there have been two fierce women who not only loved us unconditionally, but seemed to think that the universe revolved around us. One of those women was our Grandmamma. In their eyes we could do no wrong, and they would argue if anyone suggested otherwise – even if was our parents. I know that no one else will or possibly could love us in this way again, and it is a special pain to know that they are no longer here. However, at the same time, it brings us comfort knowing that they are in a better place, our grandmamma is with our papa, and we have one amazing team of guardian angels. We are forever grateful.
