Virginia Mcmullen

Virginia Phillips McMullen, former long-time resident of Meridian, Mississippi, died peacefully surrounded by friends and family on April 25, 2019 in Fayette, Alabama. Her life's journey began on September 25, 1922 in Leake County, Mississippi, daughter of Ruth and Roy Phillips. She was predeceased by her parents and all eight of her siblings. She was also predeceased by the love of her life, Marshall Aaron McMullen Sr., and by their son Gerald. She is survived by her son, Marshall Aaron McMullen Jr. (Betty) of Charleston, West Virginia, grandson Patrick McMullen of Cincinnati, Ohio, and special friend and guardian angel Shae Withers of Winfield, Alabama, who Virginia referred to as her "granddaughter." Following her high school graduation, Virginia attended business college in Meridian where she lived with her loving aunt, Nellie Brown. During World War II, Virginia boarded a train to Washington, D.C. where she worked as a clerk for the War Department, witnessed President Franklin Roosevelt's funeral parade and participated in the celebration in the streets at the end of the war. She returned to Meridian where she met and fell in love with her husband Marshall, a recently-returned veteran of the WWII Pacific Theatre. Virginia and Marshall lived in Meridian their entire married life until his death in 2003. Virginia served as a Lauderdale County Deputy Sheriff in the Tax Division. Her life centered on family and active attendance and service at Highland Baptist Church. The family sends special thanks to the staffs at the Beehive assisted living center in Carthage, MS and at Morningview Estates assisted living center in Fayette, AL, where she received phenomenal care during her last days. Virginia will be laid to rest on Sunday, April 28 at Magnolia Cemetery in Meridian. Prior to the burial, there will be a visitation at 2pm and a service at 3pm at James F. Webb Funeral Home in Meridian.
