Willa Smith

July 11, 1927 — June 2, 2020

A graveside service for Willa Deene Richardson Smith will be held Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at Oak Grove Community Cemetery with her grandson Shawn Stewart officiating. James F. Webb Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Smith, 92, of Meridian, passed away Tuesday at her residence.

Willa was a long-time member of Savoy Baptist Church and a faithful Christian. She was knowledgeable, loyal, and remained sharp with an incredible wit until her Lord called her home. She enjoyed writing historical Southern stories with a leading heroine, and, to the people who loved her most, she was the heroine to them. She loved the rustling of fallen leaves, the bright blooms of magnolias, and the color lavender. She enjoyed traveling and often did so with one of her grandchildren. She will be most remembered for being a devoted wife, a loving mother, and a special grandmother.

She is survived by her children, Sheila Thomas, Bobby Ray Smith (Gloria), Sylvia Winham (Benny), and Shirley Stewart (Bill); grandchildren, Wade Thomas, Sharene Boman, Daniel Smith, Shonda Dykes, Rhonda Alexander, Tammy Winham, Ben Winham, Stacie Frey, Shawn Stewart, and Steven Stewart; 18 great grandchildren; 5 great-great grandchildren; brother, Billie M. Richardson; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Bobby W. Smith; parents, Jefferson “May” and Mary Richardson; and siblings, Theryl Richardson and Delorece Josey.

Pallbearers will include Daniel Smith, Ben Winham, Steven Stewart, Jacob Thomas, Bubba Alexander, and Dylan Alexander.

Honorary Pallbearers will include Bobby Ray Smith, Bill Stewart, and Benny Winham.
